WHAT IS A VORTEX?

The earth is a dynamic machine, pulsing with cosmic energies. As a gigantic conductor, there are places on the planet where masses of electromagnetic and electrostatic energy travel into, or out of, the crust. Since humans are formed in conjunction with this earth energy, some believe that if you travel to a site, where energy swirls into, or out of, the planet, it interacts with your body and mind, allowing a sacred exchange of information to flow--downloading wisdom into a sensitive person, and cleansing out negative tension. These sites have been termed "vortexes" by many psychics and metaphysicians. Though spiritual leaders seek and enjoy vortexes based on ancient intuition and a tradition of sacred history, scientists are unable to define the vortex phenomenon.

As a native of Asheville, I have long heard that powerful vortexes surround these mountains. I once had the pleasure of spending an evening with Page Bryant, author of The Spiritual Reawakening of the Great Smoky Mountains, who wrote extensively about them. She also spearheaded vortex research in Sedona, Arizona. I traveled to Sedona to learn more about this mysterious topic. Regardless of what can or cannot be measured, vortex sites certainly draw large crowds of people who love them. There is no doubt, whatever a vortex may be, each site I've seen, known as one, is incredibly beautiful and majestic in some way.

My friends and I were excited to take one of Dr. Raja's 8-hour tours. He's an esoteric fellow who suggests our ancient Western North Carolina mountains are portions of mystical Atlantis that never sank beneath the ocean's waves. A day with him starts at his wonderful, holistic retreat, The Dove's Nest, a mountain, field and stream of peace and relaxation. After some sessions to help you meditate and tap into earth energies, you'll most likely eat lunch at a nice, locally-owned cafe, perhaps squeeze in some shopping at a crystal store, and visit a variety of vortex spots throughout the breathtaking mountains. You can either ride with him, follow in your car, or rent a vehicle if your group is large.

This is not a tour for the close-minded. If you don't sense earth energies, don't expect to be convinced of anything. But if you are a naturally-attuned person, who can let your imagination run wild as you enjoy bits of Raja's charming wisdom against a scenic, relaxing backdrop, this is an experience you will probably treasure.
